Understanding Depression

Depression can affect all of us at different stages of life, and while some of us may experience different symptoms, we all may be struggling with the mental isolation known as depression. Isolation within one’s own mind can be dangerous, it's similar to living in a giant fortress by yourself. Although the fortress is giant and seems like it can offer protection, it is a lonely place to reside.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived threats, but when it becomes overwhelming or persistent, it can interfere with daily life. It manifests in various ways, including feelings or worry, fear or unease, and can be accompanied by physical symptoms, like increased heart rate, sweating, or difficulty concentrating. The fight, flight, or freeze response is key aspect of life and anxiety – our body’s way of preparing to deal with danger. While this reaction is helpful in genuinely threatening situations, excessive anxiety can make everyday challenges feel overwhelming.

Addiction and drug abuse are complex issues that affects the brain, behaviour and overall mental and physical wellbeing.

Drugs affect the brains reward system, flooding it with dopamine, which reinforces the behaviour. Over time, tolerance develops, meaning the person needs more of the substance to achieve the same effect. Meaning a person needs more of the substances to achieve the same effect. This can lead to dependence, withdrawal symptoms and a cycle of continued use.

Addiction isn’t limited to substances like drugs and alcohol- it can also involve behaviours such as gambling, shopping and anything that becomes more of a ritualistic habit then conscious thought. Environment plays a huge part in all factors in our lives so it’s important to create a positive nurturing environment.
